STATEMENTS OF OUR MINISTRY
MISSION STATEMENT
TO EQUIP THE SAINTS OF THE NEW GENERATION FOR THE ARMY OF GOD
BY WORKING WITH PARENTS TO PREPARE THEM FOR GOD’S DESTINY ON THEIR
LIVES!
VISION STATEMENT
We endeavor to teach and train in areas of knowledge in order
that our students will become Christ-honoring citizens. As we touch
the hearts and lives of your children, our desire and prayer is that
they become responsible in their walk with the Lord and achieve their
individual, highest potential academically.
Harbor exists not only to protect children
from a hostile secular environment but also to educate them in
Biblical principles; not just to place them in the presence of Godly
teachers but to educate them in Godly wisdom, knowledge, and
understanding; not just to memorize Bible verses but to educate them
to make choices that are rooted in a faith commitment to Jesus Christ
and grounded on the truth of the Scriptures they have learned.
EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
The educational philosophy of Harbor Christian Academy is based on a God-centered view of truth as presented in the Bible. Since
God creates and sustains all things through His Son Jesus Christ, the universe and all life are dynamically related to God for the
purpose of glorifying Him. The entire process of education is seen as a means of directing students to fulfill God's total purpose for
their life by the following means:
* To bring the student into relationship and fellowship with God
* To help them become strong and mighty in Spirit
* To assist them in developing a Christian mind
* To enable them to think in a manner pleasing to God
* To train them in Christ-likeness
* To help the student demonstrate Christ-like characteristics while learning to appreciate personal God-given gifts
The Authority for such an education comes both from God's command that children be taught to love God and place Him first in
their lives, and from the fact that parents are responsible for the total education and training of their children. At the parents'
request, the Christian school, along with the Church, becomes partners in providing this education. The Christian school is an
extension of the Christian teaching provided by the home and church. It serves the parents by helping to fulfill their responsibility
of educating the child.
The following objectives stem from this philosophy:
I. For the spiritual growth of the students, the school seeks:
1. To teach the Bible as God's inspired Word and to develop attitudes of love and respect toward the Bible
2. To lead the pupil into a personal saving knowledge of Jesus Christ
3. To develop a desire to know and obey the will of God
4. To emphasize the importance of the local church and its task of evangelizing and discipleship
5. To encourage the development of self-discipline and responsibility based on respect for, and submission to, God and all
other authority
6. To teach the importance of becoming entrenched in God’s Word as it is the Bread of Life
II. For the student's personal and social development, the school aims:
1. To help the student develop his personality, based on a proper understanding of himself as a unique individual, created in
the image of God, to reach the fullest possible development of his own capabilities
2. To teach the students to treat everyone with love, respect, and honor
3. To lead the student into becoming a contributing member of society through submission to God’s authority
4. To develop proper attitudes toward marriage and the family and to promote the understanding required to establish God-
honoring homes
5. To promote physical fitness, good health habits, and wise use of the body as the temple of God
6. To impart Biblical attitudes discerning the temporary nature of material things and the eternal nature of the spiritual
III. For the student’s academic development, the school endeavors:
1. To promote high academic standards within the potential of the individual as uniquely created by God, and to help the
student realize his full academic potential
2. To help each student gain a thorough comprehension of the fundamental processes used in communicating with others
3. To teach and encourage the use of good study habits
4. To teach the student how to do independent research and to reason logically
5. To promote good citizenship through promoting understanding and appreciation of our Christian and American heritage of
freedom, human dignity and acceptance of authority
6. To discuss current affairs in all fields and relate them to God's plan for man
7. To produce an appreciation of the world we live in and an awareness of man's role in his environment
IV. Working with the family, the school desires:
1. To bring lost students to a saving knowledge of Christ
2. To aid families in Christian growth and to help them develop Christ-centered homes
3. To cooperate closely, as servants to the parents, in every phase of the student's development, especially as it relates
to the school program
4. To help the parents understand the school's purpose
5. To assist parents in keeping up with the changing culture, its effect on the home and its implications for their children
6. To promote regular attendance and involvement in the local church
7. To encourage parents to realize and show their responsibilities for the spiritual, moral and social education of their
children
8. For the student to become a contributing member of society who strives to serve others
STATEMENT OF FAITH
The following are the foundational beliefs on which Harbor Christian Academy rests. These beliefs will emphatically be taught
throughout all grade levels.
1. The Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. (II Peter 1:21) (II Timothy 3:16)
The Bible is our most important “textbook.” We want to impart its content to the children because it is the basis for
all truth; we want to be models of obedience to it, since first of all, God commands us to be obedient… then second because it
brings the blessings of God.
2. God is eternally existent in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
(I John 5:7) (Mathew 3:16-17)
God’s Word teaches this and we simply accept it by faith.
3. Jesus Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin, and was God manifest in the flesh. (Matthew 1:18-25) (Isaiah 7:
14)
He, being sinless, came to redeem sinful mankind.
4. Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. (I Peter 3:18) (I Corinthians
15:1-4)
This is the Gospel of Christ which is the power of God unto salvation.
5. Jesus Christ will personally return in power and glory. (Acts 1:1) (I Thessalonians 4:16-18)
He will return to gather the redeemed unto himself.
6. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. (John 3:16) (Ephesians 2:8-9) (Acts 16:31)
Belief in Christ is the only condition of salvation according to God’s Word.
7. There is a literal heaven and hell. (Revelation 21:1-4) (Luke 16:19-31)
Heaven will be the eternal home of the redeemed, hell for the lost.
8. Those who have been saved should live a separate life, striving to please the Lord.
(Romans 12:1-2) (II Corinthians 6:17)
We stress accountability. What we sow, we reap. Reinforcement is given to our children to teach them the great law
that we are responsible for our conduct.
Chapel
We believe that Chapel is a very important part of the student’s education. This is a time that students come together to praise and
worship the Lord as a body. Harbor Christian Academy invites a variety of area Pastors and other Christian speakers. This is a
particularly joyful time as the children receive monthly awards for exhibiting behavior pleasing to the Lord and for all they have
accomplished. We warmly welcome all parents who would like to participate in Chapel. At times older grades will have a
separate Chapel in order that specific issues may be addressed.
Daily Devotions and Pledges
Each day at HCA begins with the pledges to the American flag, the Christian flag, and the Bible, followed by a devotion and prayer.
All students are expected to participate therefore all students need to arrive to school on time (8:00 a.m.) so as not to create a
distraction.
PLEDGES
Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag
I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Pledge of Allegiance to the Christian Flag
I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands, one Savior, crucified, risen and coming
again with, life and liberty for all who believe.
Pledge of Allegiance to the Bible
I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God's holy Word.
I will make it a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. I will hide its word in my heart that I might not sin against God.
Character Development
Character training is an important element in Harbor Christian Academy. We believe the heart of character training is obedience
(deciding to do right), which will eventually cultivate an inner self-discipline, and is essential to the emotional, physical, social,
and spiritual well being of the student.
Biblical Position Policy
The Word of God is the ultimate source of our instruction in spiritual matters. Harbor Christian Academy has a two-fold biblical
emphasis: to show each student his need of Jesus Christ as Savior and to present the Bible as God’s absolute standard for moral
conduct. Although Harbor Christian Academy primarily uses the King James Version in accordance with Christian curriculum, and
our teachers use the King James Version Bible in the classroom, we do not make any claims that it is the only acceptable
translation and from time to time may reference other translations for the purpose of verification and understanding. Therefore,
teachers, students, and parents of Harbor Christian Academy who do not necessarily hold to this same view, must agree to defer
to the prayerful decision of the Administration if a question arises. It is our purpose only to present truth as we have presented
scripture throughout our Handbook. We counsel each student as the Holy Spirit directs and we will strive to fill each student with
the wisdom of the Lord.
THE BIBLE-OUR FOUNDATION
The ministry of Harbor Christian Academy is founded upon the inspired, infallible Holy Scriptures, which are our unshakable
foundation. This foundation is entrenched in our classrooms and permeates our curriculum, and is held in the heart of all of our
decisions. There are several basic reasons why this is so:
THE WORD OF GOD IS TRUTH. John 17:17 states “Sanctify them through thy Truth: Thy word is Truth.” In order for us to minister
effectively to the children, we must be founded upon the truth and there is only one source of truth, God’s Holy Word. Harbor
Christian Academy emphatically rejects man’s age-old philosophy of humanism, which exalts man. In like manner, we reject man’
s New Age movement, which scoffs at God and attempts to make man divine. We instead cling to the precious Bible which exalts
God.
THE WORD OF GOD DIRECTS OUR STEPS. Psalm 119:133 states “Order my steps in thy word.” Man’s philosophies have utterly
failed since they are solely of man and therefore contrary to God’s word. Jeremiah exposed man’s false philosophies centuries
ago when he declared (Jer. 10:23), “O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his
steps.” Boys and girls need their steps directed. They require proper guidance based upon proper authority. God’s Word is our
authority.
THE WORD OF GOD COMBATS SIN IN OUR LIVES. The Psalmist declared in Psalm 119:11, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that
I might not sin against thee.” We are sinners and the Bible declares that even the saved still retain the carnal nature within us.
The Word of God combats this tendency to sin. However, when we do sin, we have the promise of I John 1:9 that our sins will be
forgiven.
THE WORD OF GOD PROVIDES STRENGTH. Psalm 119:28 says, “Strengthen thou me according unto thy word.” We are all in need
of strength to face the daily trials of life. God’s Word provides such strength as we meditate upon His Word.
SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION
Harbor Christian Academy has an aggressive Scripture memorization program at all grade levels. It is not enough simply to teach
the Word of God to the students, but they must also be directed and held accountable for the memorization of Scripture, which we
believe is crucial to their spiritual development and well-being. The Bible expounds the principle of committing one's mind to the
Word of God and we believe there is no better method than verse and chapter memorization and knowledge of God’s Word.
Consider the following Scriptures:
Psalm 119:1 "Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord."
Psalm 119:9 "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy Word."
Psalm 119:11 "Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."
Psalm 119:15 "I will meditate in thy precepts and have respect unto thy ways."
Psalm 119:80 "Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed."
CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE POLICY
We expect our students to be:

Investigative Learners who:
• Assess their needs and apply appropriate strategies to learn concepts and skills
• Formulate positive personal values based upon Biblical principles
• Continue learning throughout life
Perceptive Thinkers who:
• Identify, analyze, discriminate, prioritize, and apply information

Involved Citizens who:
• Respect and submit to authority
• Demonstrate positive and productive citizenship
• Practice Biblical principles
Harbor Christian Academy reserves the right to deny admission for students or families whose lifestyles do not promote Biblical
principles and teachings. This includes but is not limited to homosexuality, bisexuality, sexual promiscuity, the pregnancy of a
student, the use of tobacco or alcohol products, the abuse or misuse of legal prescriptions or over the counter drugs or
substances, the use of illegal substances of any kind, criminal activities past or present. These may prohibit enrollment, or bring
about dismissal of students already enrolled with no refunds of fees paid. HCA is a PreK – 12th grade facility that has promised to
uphold clear Biblical teachings and to guard the hearts and minds of all of our students.
CHURCH ATTENDANCE
Students and their families are encouraged to have a local church family and regularly attend services. HCA families that do not
have a church home are encouraged to attend one of our partner churches.
ADMISSIONS POLICIES
Harbor Christian Academy offers a program for students who desire an excellent educational foundation in a Christian environment.
INTERVIEW
The Administrator will schedule an interview with the parents of prospective students. At the Administrator's discretion, the
student will either be invited to attend the initial interview or to a follow-up interview on a separate visit. Father and mother, as
well as the student (5th-12th), are required to participate in the interview process before admission to the school can be
considered. Several interviews may be required before a final decision is made. NOTE: Students age 18 and over at the time of
desired enrollment may not be admitted.
REVIEW OF STUDENT'S HISTORY
Parents should bring records from previous schools including grades, transcripts and achievement test scores as well as teacher
recommendations. Parents seeking to enroll a student at the beginning of a school year should bring the student's academic
information from the previous school year. Parents seeking to enroll a student after a school year has begun should bring the
student's academic information for both the current school year and the previous school year. Harbor Christian Academy will
choose to administer an assessment test where additional data is needed.
Parents are required to provide information regarding a student's previous or pending infractions with law enforcement. You are
also required to disclose information if your student has received emotional or psychological evaluation and/or counseling for any
reason. Withholding such information could result in dismissal with no refunds. We desire to reach all young people's hearts and
minds for our Lord, Jesus Christ. Therefore this information is very valuable in helping us understand and help each student.
ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT
The Administration will use the historical information to assess the student's academic aptitude and to identify potential problems.
All students admitted to the school will be evaluated to see if they are performing at grade level and will be admitted at the
Administrator's discretion. If there are indications of academic, emotional, psychological, legal, or past discipline problems,
suspensions, or repeated absences, the Administrator has the right to contact the student's previous school, law enforcement
officials, physicians and other authorities for additional information and clarification.
ADMISSION DECISION
Upon completion of the interview process, review and assessment, the Administrator will make a determination to grant
probationary admission or to decline admission.
AUTHORITY TO GRANT OR DECLINE ADMISSION
The Administration has absolute authority in all matters regarding admission and dismissal. The decision to admit or decline
admission remains the absolute right of Harbor Christian Academy.
PROBATIONARY ADMISSION
All admissions are granted as probationary pending the student's satisfactory adjustment to the school environment, curriculum
and standards of conduct.
The probationary period will consist of one nine-week grading period. Probationary status may be extended for an additional nine-
week grading period for students with deficiencies or areas of concern, if the Administration feels the area of concern can be
corrected in that time. If, at the end of the second nine-week grading period, the necessary changes have not occurred, the
student will be dismissed from the program. Probationary admission can be extended if the necessary changes are in process
and the student's teacher(s) and Administrator agree that the change is likely. Probationary admission will be reviewed each
grading period by the teacher(s) and Administrator.
DENIAL OF ADMISSION
Denial of admission may occur when, in the opinion of the Administration, Harbor Christian Academy is unable to meet the needs of
the individual student based on evaluations and issues that would warrant denial or if it is determined that the student would not
benefit from attending Harbor Christian Academy.
NON-DISCRIMINATORY STATEMENT
Harbor Christian Academy admits students of any race to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally made available
to all students. Harbor Christian Academy practices a Biblical philosophy of admissions, not discriminatory on the basis of race,
sex, color, or national origin in the administration of its policies, admissions, scholarships, athletics, and other school directed
programs.
ENROLLMENT PROCESS
Once a student is granted admission, the Enrollment Process will begin. This process consists of the following:
• completion of all necessary paperwork
• submission of a certified copy of the student's birth certificate
• submission of a current record of immunization
• payment of the Enrollment and Supplies Fees
• payment of the initial tuition based on the tuition payment schedule selected
• proof of guardianship (if applicable)
• court document proving right of parent to enroll their student if sole responsibility has been
awarded**
• all parents, guardians, and students grades 5-12 must sign the Handbook Agreement Form
**Our student body is comprised of many different types of families; therefore HCA has adopted the following state guidelines. HCA
must have on file proof of guardianship of each student and the court document proving rights for that guardian to enroll their
student if sole responsibility has been awarded. We need both parents to be in sync unless extenuating circumstances exist.
The Enrollment process must be completed in its entirety before a student is allowed to begin class and will be required each year
thereafter.
Completion of the required paperwork enables Harbor Christian Academy the greatest opportunity to serve your student. As per the
laws of the state of Texas, we require a certified copy of your student's birth certificate and a copy of each student's current
immunization record.
ENROLLMENT PRIORITY
The initial enrollment period is reserved for current students and their siblings. During this time, current students are encouraged
to complete the enrollment process. Following this phase, enrollment will be offered to new families.
WAITING LISTS
Once the maximum number of students has been enrolled for a class, a waiting list will begin. A student will not be placed on a
waiting list until they have completed the enrollment process. All paperwork and fees will be held until the student is placed. If
the student is not placed, the fees will be returned. The maximum number of students in Kindergarten Readiness is 14. For most
elementary grades the maximum is 16 students per class.
ENROLLMENT FEE
The NON-REFUNDABLE Enrollment Fee is assessed per student, per year, and must be paid in its entirety prior to the beginning of
class. This fee includes but is not limited to consumable materials such as classroom, student and janitorial supplies, teaching
materials, the use of textbooks, workbooks and testing materials, student awards, enhancement program supplies such as
Physical Education, and staff training and development. All supplies and materials covered by the Enrollment Fee remain the
property of Harbor Christian Academy.
TUITION ASSISTANCE
For families considering tuition assistance from the school, we would ask you to please prayerfully consider any sacrifices you
can make in your lifestyle and budget to allow your child(ren) to attend. We believe that if the Lord convicts you to place your child
(ren) in a Christian school environment He will also provide you with the means. Our school has very limited funds and feels a
tremendous responsibility to be good stewards of the tuition that many of our families pay at a great personal sacrifice. However,
we do realize that certain circumstances arise for some families which would prevent their child(ren) from attending, or continuing
to attend, Harbor Christian Academy. Should you have concerns of this type, please see our Administrator.
ADDITIONAL FEES, FINES AND CHARGES
The goal of Harbor Christian Academy is to cover all necessary expenses through enrollment and tuition fees. However, from time
to time, a class may decide to participate in a project or field trip, which requires additional funding. These situations require
special approval by the Administrator.
Although participation in most activities is included in the Annual Tuition Fee, students may be required to pay additional fees or
charges for such things as competition entry fees or travel expenses, etc.
All students are encouraged to properly care for textbooks, workbooks and other school property. If a book is found to be damaged
(including marked or colored in any way) the parents will be charged the cost necessary to replace the book. Additional materials
fees will apply to students who abuse school supplies.
Additional late fees, fines and charges may be assessed as approved by the Administrator for items such as damaged or broken
property, failure to adhere to policies, failure to observe rules and warnings. In addition, Learning Center students may have
additional fees for accelerated programs or for repeat PACEs.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance at school provides a student with classroom experience, which is composed of participation in class activities and
direct instruction conducted by the teacher. The instructional program designed by each teacher is a progressive and sequential
experience. It is generally impossible for that experience to be "made up." For this reason, extended absences will be seen as a
serious problem.
REQUIRED PROGRAMS
All students are required to attend school-sponsored productions such as the Christmas and End of the Year programs. Failure to
do so will result in an unexcused absence on the student’s attendance record. The school will notify parents concerning any other
mandatory programs.
STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR ATTENDANCE
The State Board of Education Law #21.04 states students are allowed 15 days of excused absences per school year. All school
assignments, which are missed, must be completed. If there are more than 15 absences, the Administration will determine if the
absences must be made up. The Administration has the authority to assess each case.
ABSENCES
Failure of a student to attend school will be considered an absence. Each absence will be considered excused or unexcused.
EXCUSED ABSENCES include personal illness, serious illness in the family, death in the family, court appearances, pre-planned
and approved absences or absences due to “acts of God”. When it is known ahead of time that a student will be absent, it is the
responsibility of the parents to contact the teacher(s) to secure the student’s assignments for that period of time. If the absence
has not been planned (illness, personal emergency, etc.), parents are asked to call the school before 9:00 a.m. so that we will be
able to notify the teachers of the reason for the absence. A student with an excused absence will be given a reasonable time
frame to complete assignments and exams missed due to the absence. If the work is not turned in within the reasonable time
frame, the student may be given a zero (0). The authority for determining the legitimacy of an absence rests solely with the school
Administration. Consideration is always given in case of severe illness and other severe circumstances.
Although we use an individualized curriculum, attendance remains vital. A Request for Planned Absence form must be filled out
and turned into the school office two (2) weeks before an absence due to a family trip, etc. The Administration reserves the right
to approve or disapprove this request.
Unexcused absences are unacceptable and will be dealt with on an individual basis. Depending upon the severity of the reason
for being absent, the student shall be subject to suspension or expulsion.
Truancy is the absence from school for any reason without the knowledge and consent of parents and/or school officials. Truancy
is a violation of state law and, therefore, is considered to be a most severe violation of school policy. Parents will be notified and
the student shall be subject to suspension or expulsion.
ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL
School begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and students must go directly to the designated area (absolutely no other areas) upon arrival.
Arrival time is between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m. For safety purposes we cannot allow students to be on campus before 7:45 without a
parent present. All students arriving prior to 7:45 are required to wait with parents until 7:45.
TARDINESS
If your child has not arrived in time for the 8:00 a.m. opening, he/she is TARDY. This includes all students Pre-K-12th grade. Being
late is disruptive and disrespectful to other students and the teachers. After three tardies the child will receive an in house
detention at the discretion of the Administrator and teacher. There will be a charge for detention to cover the cost of the teacher’s
time. WEATHER, TRAFFIC, AND CAR POOL ISSUES ARE GENERALLY NOT ACCEPTABLE REASONS FOR TARDINESS. Parents (or
drivers of car pools) are responsible for getting students to school on time. Three tardies constitutes one unexcused absence.
COLLEGE VISITATION
The following excused absences for college visits are allowed per school year: Juniors (11th grade) are allowed two (2) days and
Seniors (12th grade) are allowed four (4) days. These are visits, which may be either school or parent sponsored and the students
are responsible for making up all assignments and tests within the time criteria set by the Administrator. The Administration must
be notified by the parents of any parent sponsored college visit two weeks prior to the visit for permission and procedure.
GRADING SYSTEM
Progress reports are sent home as needed during each nine (9) week reporting period. This notification primarily pertains to
grades dropping to 75 or below per subject. For Pre-K through Twelfth grade, weekly folders are also sent home requiring parent
signature. Parent signatures acknowledge that the parents have received the report. Teachers are required to notify parents
before the end of a grading period if a student is in danger of receiving a failing grade. Parents are also required to communicate
with teachers concerning their child's academic progress.
Report cards will be given at the end of each nine (9) week reporting period. Please see the current school calendar for
designated report card dates.
*** The Accelerated Christian Education program curriculum (PACEs) carry its own grading expectations. In order to pass the
PACE and move on to the next one, the student must earn a score of 80 or above. Students who fail to reach the minimum score
will need to re-do the PACE. There will be a fee assessed to cover the cost of the additional PACE.
ACHIEVEMENT TESTS
Each spring, Harbor Christian Academy administers the Stanford Achievement Test for grades Kindergarten through High School,
for the purpose of student evaluation. Copies of test results will be provided to parents at a conference to discuss the results.
High School students, grades Nine (9) through Twelve (12), will be provided guidance concerning the PSAT, SAT, ACT or other
necessary testing and informed of where and when they may be taken. HCA will schedule the date of the PSAT and all participating
students will take the test on the same day. It is the parents’ responsibility to sign up their 11th and 12th grade students for the
SAT or ACT tests. Visit www.collegeboard.com for more information.
HOMEWORK
If your child has struggled with diligence or other issues and has not finished the daily work, he/she will have homework assigned
to complete the daily assignments and Homework slips will be provided to the parents by the teacher via the students.
Homework may also be assigned if a special assignment is given, to reinforce class work, or for reasons of enrichment and
creativity (i.e., science projects, research papers, writing assignments, etc.) Your child should have a definite time and place to
do homework. The amount of time required to complete homework varies from day to day and from child to child. Depending upon
the level of the subjects, students may have more homework. Generally, HCA provides adequate time in the classroom to finish
daily assignments. If your child is spending an excessive amount of time on homework, please set up a conference with the
teacher. Because homework is the only opportunity for incomplete work to be finished, it is vital that parents require their
students to complete it.
If daily homework is turned in late, teachers have the flexibility to determine the penalty which may include detention resulting in a
detention fee. However, the student may receive a grade of zero (0). It is very important that students learn good study habits and
responsibility in completing homework assignments on time.
FIELD TRIPS
Teachers are encouraged to take their class off school grounds for classroom enrichment and to broaden their students'
educational experience. In order for a student to participate in a field trip, he/she must have earned the right to do so. This means
a student must have shown that he/she is responsible and will obey the rules that are necessary to have a safe and successful
field trip. Teachers may set requirements that will need to be fulfilled, depending on the nature of the field trip. Each student must
have a signed permission slip on file.
Parents, we sincerely appreciate your participation in most field trips - we can ALWAYS use extra help supervising the children
when they are off campus. (And your child LOVES having Mom or Dad along to share their new experiences!) Any variance of
dress code on field trip days will be at the discretion of the Administration. We ask that any volunteers helping on the field trip also
follow the same dress code that is required of the teachers. HCA shirts will be worn for all trips that do not require other specific
attire. NOTE: For safety purposes siblings will not be allowed unless specified.
COMMUNICATION AND SUPPORT
Harbor Christian Academy believes it is very important for the school and the home to work together in the educational process.
The school communicates with the home in a variety of ways, which include the following:
Email - This is our primary mode of communication and we will do as much as possible through this means. Please notify the
school office immediately of any changes. We must have a correct email address on file for all parents at all times. Any email
communications from parents to the school may be sent to: kjohns@harborchristianacademy.net. They will be forwarded to the
appropriate person.
Tuesday Folders - Each week you will receive a folder (generally sent home with the youngest student in the family) on Tuesday
that will contain important papers and information from the office and classroom. You will also receive a school newsletter that
will keep you well informed and inspired. Please sign and return the folder by the next day. This system relays vital information
and it is imperative that you give this your time.
Report Cards - issued every nine (9) weeks
Progress Reports - issued at anytime of concern for students with poor grades or poor work habits (It is our philosophy that
parents need to know of any problems before receiving a report card.)
Telephone Conferences - calls made by teachers, counselors, or administrators
Personal Conferences - initiated by either the home or the school
Home Visits – may be scheduled throughout the school year
Special Mail-outs
Special Called Meetings and/or Letters
PTF meetings
PARENT / GUARDIAN CONDUCT
There are many family situations at HCA. We ask that regardless of the family dynamics, every adult family member honor and
respect the role that HCA plays in the life of each student. Should there be disagreements that cannot be worked out, we ask that
they be discussed with the Administration and not the student. It is our experience that many students have had unnecessary
stress by being included in information that they are not equipped to handle. It is confusing to be put in the middle of adult
dynamics.
Threats, abusive language, and/or disrespect by a parent/guardian, family member, or friend of a student toward any Harbor
Christian Academy employee may result in the dismissal of the student and/or legal action. We understand that emotions can run
high however we ask that all parents prayerfully consider their words and actions and the effect of those beforehand.
TUTORIAL HELP
Students sometimes need additional help in a subject. The first place to turn for help is the teacher of the course. Most teachers at
the school are willing to give extra time to students who are conscientiously trying to improve. Students may also be paired with
peers who understand the material and can help. Most students who are struggling need only a little extra time to bring them to an
understanding of the material. Parents of students with severe deficiencies may need to seek additional outside tutoring or
medical services. The Administration may be able to provide names of providers of the service needed. The Administration must
be notified when outside tutoring is being considered and the tutor must confer with the teacher of the class in order to coordinate
objectives and methods. It is imperative that the Administration be aware of any student receiving outside tutorial help, medical
intervention or therapy. HCA will also need to be notified of any change of medical or therapy provider.
RETENTION
The teacher's professional judgment will be a major factor in determining retention. Parents will be asked to have a conference
with the Administrator and teacher regarding retention. The primary academic goal of Harbor Christian Academy is the success of
every child, and success is based on emotional maturity and the ability to accomplish requirements at their grade level. In some
cases, a student may not have learned some basic skills or may not have reached the emotional maturity level required. Both of
these areas are great determining factors. We will work closely together in deciding the proper course of action to take, with the
final decision resting with the Administrator.
GRUMBLING
ARGUMENTATIVE ATTITUDE
TALKING BACK
"Do all things without murmurings and disputings"
Philippians 2: 14.
In order for us to fulfill the will of God, the Word of God must be the basis of all our actions. To the very best of our abilities, the
entire staff at Harbor Christian Academy desires to be Christ-like. We expect the same from our students and feel it is imperative
that parents know we cannot permit grumbling about assignments or directions given by teachers. We expect our children to
maintain a positive attitude as they learn and understand that talking back is never acceptable. IF these are habits that are
allowed in the home, the students will naturally bring them into school and they will have a more difficult time growing in the Lord.
Children must be trained in the home to respect authority with the proper attitude. Without this proper training, Harbor cannot be
effective with its students. In short, persistent argumentative attitudes will not be permitted at Harbor Christian Academy.
“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I
command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in
your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”
Deuteronomy 6:5-7 (NKJV)
DISCIPLINE POLICY
The elementary discipline policy of Harbor Christian Academy is designed to encourage Christ-like behavior and to teach students
the value of making good choices. Christ-like behavior ensures a classroom environment in which children can learn
academically while growing in the Lord. Harbor Christian Academy seeks to balance instruction, correction, punishment and
rewards, all of which are essential elements of the discipline process.
After students have been given the opportunity to learn the class rules and adjust to the routine, the teachers will begin to enforce
the discipline policies. We have an awesome, positive way of handling discipline in our classrooms. Each teacher will chart the
daily behavior of their students with incentives for good behavior.
Harbor Christian Academy always desires to be fair in our judgment and in any action we take in disciplining children. While each
situation is different, it is essential for us to maintain your faith, trust and support as we purpose to treat each child fairly and
appropriately.
We have found that positive reinforcement reduces behavioral problems. Behavioral problems are addressed immediately. If a
problem continues, the Administrator will be called in to help and parents will be notified.
If a student is sent to the Administrator the child may be instructed to call his/her parents (unless other contact is listed) at work to
explain their offense. If the behavior persists, both the Administrator and the student will talk with the parents by telephone to
determine the appropriate discipline. Regardless of the form of discipline, the Administrator prays with the student before returning
to class.
A student is sent directly to the office, without second or third chances for the following: cheating, lying, stealing, bodily harm to
another child, spitting, inappropriate language, blatant disrespect toward any teacher, destruction of school property, or when the
student refuses counsel from teachers. Anytime a student is sent to the Administrator, a Notice of Concern will be sent home
which will require the signature of a parent.
Here is a list of some of the offenses that will be addressed immediately and action will be taken, pertaining to degree, as deemed
fit by the teacher, Administration and the parents. This is in no particular order of level of offense and not limited to:
• public display of affection
• excessive horseplay between students
• rebellion
• dress code violation
• abusive language, profanity, suggestive language, dirty jokes, etc.
• a grumbling or complaining spirit
• disrespect for authority or peers
• fighting (verbally or physically)
• dishonesty
• excessive disruption
• acts endangering the safety of students or staff members on the campus
• abuse, destruction or vandalism of school property
• sexual misconduct
• violence
• obscenity
• possession of occult materials (this is a subject matter not appropriate verbally,
physically, or written - for clarification, see Administration.)
• possession or use of tobacco, alcohol and illegal drugs
• leaving campus during school hours without permission from staff (regardless of permission from the parents)
• possession of a weapon
• possession of pornographic materials
• loitering
It is understood that not all gross misconduct can be noted; therefore Harbor Christian Academy has the absolute right to determine
other forms of misconduct. Searches of persons or lockers, desks, purses and automobiles by the Administration with a witness
are an option when there is reasonable suspicion that inappropriate materials or substances are in the possession of a student or
students. If there is reasonable suspicion that a student has used or is using illegal drugs, a drug test, at parents’ expense, may
be required prior to that student's continued attendance at Harbor Christian Academy. No non-school approved locks will be
permitted on lockers or any other personal property.
Students, when admitted to our school, become identified with Harbor Christian Academy and the school will be judged by the
conduct of its students. All students must understand that in order for Harbor to maintain its high standards, we reserve the right
to discipline, suspend or expel a student who is guilty of misconduct on or off the school campus. This includes social networking
sites such as Facebook and My Space. We reserve the right to check for inappropriate activities and encourage the parents to do
so as well. In all cases, the heart of the student will be the major component in disciplinary decisions.
CHEATING
Cheating includes (but is not limited to) copying homework, handing in another's work, plagiarism in research papers and
compositions, unauthorized assistance on tests or quizzes, scoring violations, and tampering with curriculum in any form
including diagnostic or computer. It involves misrepresenting information and/or taking information from another source and
presenting it as one's own. Cheating violates 3 of God's 10 commandments: stealing, lying, and coveting and HCA holds a zero
tolerance for it. Therefore, students must come to understand the seriousness of an act of cheating. Teachers are required to take
precautions in terms of test security and the structure of the classroom testing environment in order to protect students from
unnecessary temptation. The teacher frequently reminds students of the consequences of cheating. The Administrator has the
authority to assess each situation. Cheating may result in the suspension/expulsion of the student from Harbor Christian Academy.
If it is determined that a student has indeed cheated, the following actions may be taken:
1. Cheating is a violation of honor and leadership is a matter of honor. Cheating and leadership do not go hand in hand
therefore if the student holds any sort of leadership position in a club or class, or is a member of an athletic team, the student may
lose the position and the student will be disqualified for Honor Roll.
2. The student may receive a zero (0) on the assignment and be required to repeat the PACE. Material fees will apply.
3. The Administrator will be notified and a parent conference called.
CELL PHONES and ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Students are ABSOLUTELY NOT PERMITTED to have cell phones on their person during school hours. They may NOT keep them in
their purse, coat, backpack or locker. If the student drives, phones may be locked in their car until dismissal, otherwise they must
be checked in to the front office before 8:00. Cell phones that are seen or heard after 8:00 and before school is dismissed will be
confiscated. Confiscated phones may be examined, including phone numbers called, pictures stored and text messages sent and
received. Inappropriate materials found may result in further disciplinary action. In addition, students will be charged a $10.00 fee
to have their phone returned or will leave the phone in the possession of the Administration for a period of 10 days. Parents who
need to get an important message to their student may contact the school office. We will relay an urgent message to your child as
soon as possible. Students will be allowed to use the school phone for emergencies.
Electronic devices such as MP3 players, cd players, gameboys, etc., are generally not allowed on campus. The Learning Center
teachers, at the discretion of the Administration, may make exceptions but there will be definite parameters in place that students
will be expected to abide by.
GRIEVANCE POLICY
From time to time, parents may have concerns or issues that must be addressed. We ask the parents to follow the procedures set
forth in this policy. We feel that this is the best way to handle any concerns, as it keeps communication open to facilitate and
quickly resolve the area of difficulty.
1. If the grievance is in regard to a classroom situation, method of teaching, or teacher/student interaction:
a. Parents must first talk with the teacher and attempt to prayerfully work through it.
b. If parents are not satisfied with the results, they may share their concerns with the Administrator.
c. It is never acceptable to discuss your grievance with another parent, teacher or staff member first. “I just want your opinion” is
not a reason to do so. It is also un-Christlike to discuss your grievance with another parent prior to discussing it with the teacher.
“DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.” Luke 6:31
2. If the grievance is in regard to the policies or structure of Harbor Christian Academy, or other areas overseen by the
Administration:
a. All grievances should first be made in writing and submitted to the Administrator.
b. If parents feel that they received an inadequate response, they may request a meeting
with the Administrator. A meeting will be arranged with all parties present.
If, at any time, a parent feels they can no longer support the school, it’s Administration and all policies outlined in this Handbook,
the parent should immediately request a meeting with the Administrator.
If dissension continues and parents have not voluntarily withdrawn from the school and if the Administrator feels this matter
cannot be resolved to the mutual benefit of both parties, HCA reserves the right to request that the parents remove their child(ren)
from Harbor Christian Academy. IN EITHER CASE, TUITION AND FEES ARE NOT REFUNDABLE.
STUDENT GRIEVANCES
It is extremely important that students learn the Biblical method for resolving conflicts with other students or with teachers or the
Administration. The first thing that should occur is for the student to address the person (directly and confidentially) that they are
experiencing the conflict with. If the concern continues, then the parent may step in to help. If the student needs assistance in
deciding how to address the issue, he or she may at any time speak to the Administrator.
EXPULSION
We realize the seriousness of expelling a student. If, after working with the school, a student and his parents refuse counsel or
are not able to eliminate behavioral problems, the student will be suspended or expelled. If suspension/expulsion results from
violation of the discipline policy, the family of the suspended/expelled agrees to remove all grounds for any liability against Harbor
Christian Academy, all full time or part time faculty members, and anyone else affiliated with HCA. In addition, there will be no
refund of fees or tuitions.
Re-admittance to Harbor at a later date will depend upon the student’s attitude and circumstances at the time of re-application, and
also upon the seriousness of the misconduct. The school retains the right to refuse re-admittance to a student who has exhibited
gross misconduct and/or disrespect at home or in the community during the suspension period.
HEALTH AND ACCIDENT INSURANCE
Harbor Christian Academy does not carry insurance for student injuries. Medical and Accident Insurance are the responsibility of
the parents. Harbor Christian Academy, and tenants/owners of off campus destinations will not be held responsible for any
liability or expenses incurred as a result of any injuries sustained while your child is in our care. This includes school hours, field
trips, after school activities, etc. In addition, Harbor Christian Academy, and tenants/owners of off campus destinations will not be
held responsible for any liability or expenses incurred as a result of any injury sustained off campus if your child has left the
campus, authorized or unauthorized.
ILLNESS
HCA recognizes the desire for every child to be as healthy as possible and works to prevent the spread of illness. We are also
required to follow the guidelines of the State of Texas, regardless of parent circumstances. Students who become ill during the
course of the school day will be sent to the school office. The student will be observed and their temperature taken, unless the
reason is due to an accident or injury. If it is the judgment of the administration that the student is indeed ill, or if the symptoms
prevent the student from remaining in the classroom, the parents will be contacted. Harbor Christian Academy has no provision
for the care of sick children; therefore, students must be picked up immediately upon notification. All students will remain in the
school office until picked up. Please keep your child at home until he/she has been free from illness or any elevation of
temperature for 24 hours WITHOUT the aid of medication, or until cleared by a physician. One parent must be available by phone to
the school at all times. In the case of extreme emergency, all instructions given on the Emergency Contact Form will be followed
if possible. Should the need ever arise for EMS to be summoned, they will make the call as to if and to what hospital a child
should be transported.
If we are unable to reach a parent, we will begin calling persons listed on your emergency contact form. In completing your
Enrollment paperwork, please be sure to list people who are usually able to pick your child up in the event we cannot reach the
parents.
REPORTING CHILD ABUSE
In accordance with state law and school policy, school staff is required under penalty of fine and jail term to report the reasonable
suspicion of physical abuse, sexual abuse, or child neglect. HCA is required to report even if the information is from another
parent or a student shares the suspicion with ANY HCA representative. In this very serious and legally narrow area, the school
will not contact parents in advance of making a report to authorities, which would be the procedure followed in most other legal
matters. The clear intent of the law, based on the seriousness of the crimes listed above, is to mandate that a report of reasonable
suspicion of abuse be made. School staff will make such reports in the best interest of the affected child and do not, once
reasonable suspicion is established, have any legal alternative except to make the report to the proper authorities for their
investigation and review.
MEDICATION
If at all possible, medication should be administered by the parents at home. If your child needs to take medication during the
school day, we MUST have parental authorization on file before we can dispense any medications including "over-the-counter"
medication of any type or prescription medications. ONE EMERGENCY DOSAGE OF PRESCRIBED DAILY MEDICATION MUST BE
KEPT AT HCA AT ALL TIMES AND REPLENISHED IF USED. IF A STUDENT HAS MISSED THEIR REGULAR AT HOME DOSE AND DOES
NOT HAVE A RESERVE DOSE AT HCA, PARENTS WILL BE CALLED TO EITHER BRING IT IMMEDIATELY OR THE STUDENT WILL BE
SENT HOME.
Due to the individuality of each student, Harbor Christian Academy will not supply medications, including Tylenol, Advil, Pepto-
Bismol, Tums, etc. All medication that may be needed at any time needs to come from the home.
For all medications, prescription or non-prescription:
1. Written permission has been given by the parents authorizing the school to administer medication to the student. Forms are
available in the school office.
2. "Over-the-Counter" medication must be in its original container with dosage information. The student's name should be
written on the medication package as well as the date to discontinue medication. This includes all “over the counter”
medications.
3. Prescription medication must be in its original container with prescription number, date filled, physician’s name, directions
for use, and child’s name. Asthma inhalers will be kept in the school office as well.
4. All medications must be brought directly to the school office by parents. Do not put medications in lunch boxes or give them
to the teacher.
5. All students taking daily medication must have at least 1 emergency dose kept at the school at all times. Parents will be
notified when the medication is low and needs to be replenished, or if the student forgets to take their daily dose of medication at
home.
Please Note: Tylenol or similar products will not be given on an “as needed” basis and will not be dispensed for allergy symptoms.
ATTENTION DEFICIT (HYPERACTIVITY) DISORDER OR OTHER LEARNING CONCERNS
Harbor Christian Academy genuinely seeks to help students diagnosed as having ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), sensory disorders and neurological challenges; however, we must know, during the interview
process, your doctor's evaluation of your child if he/she has been diagnosed with either ADD, ADHD or any other learning or
neurological disorder, or if there is any suspicion that your child may have any type of learning disorder or neurological disorder. If
your child exhibits behavior associated with ADD, ADHD or other learning or neurological disorder, we will require that your child
be tested and evaluated. We require, within 30 days, a copy of these evaluations for our file, as well as the doctor's written
recommendation of behavioral management for your child. Medication is often recommended; however, if your doctor does not
require that your child take medication, we must have a letter from your doctor stating this.
If your doctor has recommended medication or dietary restrictions for the welfare of your child's emotional and academic growth,
and you decline to follow the doctor's instructions, your child may not be permitted to continue at Harbor Christian Academy.
Success has been achieved primarily because the parents follow their doctor's orders COMPLETELY and support the teacher and
the school. In many instances, this student's only hope of having their mind and body work successfully together depends upon
medication. Diagnosis of any learning challenges are especially beneficial when begun in the lower elementary grades to ensure
the student's success in future years. The earlier the diagnosis is made, along with treatment, the greater the chances are of
success.
Once a child has been recommended and is going for evaluation, the school must be able to supply the doctor with the Classroom
Scale Learning/Behavior Evaluation and general assessment from that student’s teacher. Harbor Christian Academy will not
accept a doctor's evaluation unless the physician has reviewed our teacher's evaluation as part of the physician's overall
diagnosis. Upon completion of the physician's diagnosis, the school must receive a copy of the final evaluation within 30 days,
WITHOUT EXCEPTION.
A child with ADD/ADHD or any other learning or neurological concerns, medicated or non-medicated, will be required to comply
with all discipline policies as stated in this Handbook.
In accordance with our Educational Philosophy, a child who continues to exhibit unmanageable behavior, disrupting classroom
environment or has academic difficulties beyond our resources will be required to seek another educational setting.
IMMUNIZATIONS
A current record of immunization is required as part of your enrollment process. Texas State Law mandates that each child
entering school have certain immunizations and it is the legal responsibility of the parents to insure that children's immunizations
are up-to-date and meet the standards of this law. Please contact your physician if you have any questions. Some parents are
opposed to having their children immunized against some or all diseases. In this case, you must provide proof that you have legal
consent for exemption. If your doctor feels that any immunization could be harmful to your child, please bring a written statement
from your doctor stating which immunizations he is advising against, why and for how long. HCA reserves the right to refuse
admission for non-immunized children.
HEARING, VISION AND SCOLIOSIS SCREENING
Vision and Hearing screening is required for children age 4 and students in grades Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th each
calendar year. Also, screening is required on all new students regardless of their grade. Screening is encouraged but not
required for 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th grades.
Scoliosis screening (for abnormal curvature of the spine) is required for children in grades 5th and 8th, and encouraged but not
required for grades 6th, 7th and 9th.
To assist parents, this screening is made available during school hours each year. Parents are responsible for the associated
cost. Parents may also have the screening done elsewhere. However, a copy of the actual results (not simply "Pass" or "Fail")
must be submitted to the school by the scheduled date of the school screening. Results of this screening will be provided to
parents.
PARENT TEACHER FELLOWSHIP
Required Attendance
Parents are the mortar of Harbor Christian Academy, and as a parent you will share in the privilege of shaping your child's
education. Every Harbor parent is a member of the PTF. This is the perfect solution to being an involved part of your child’s
school and receiving consistent and up-to-date communication. It is also the best way for our families to get to know one another
and be well informed of school issues. PTF meetings provide a wonderful opportunity to share your vision for the school and help
develop a plan for future goals and experience success together.
PTF meetings are regularly scheduled and announced in the school newsletter. At least one parent from each family is required to
attend the PTF meeting so that you can participate in decisions which best serve your child and the school. Our preference would
be attendance by both parents, but we understand “school night” issues and babysitting situations. For our single parent families,
we require attendance every other meeting. If childcare is a concern, please contact us in advance and we will do our best to
assist for a nominal fee.
Tuition fees do not cover all expenses of running a school. To keep costs as low as possible, both parents are strongly urged to
commit to at least three hours of volunteer work each month. There are many opportunities to serve during school hours,
evenings or on weekends. Some areas which need your help are:
Fundraisers Teacher Appreciation School-wide events
Building maintenance Grading papers Home-room parent
To find out which opportunities best match your skills and schedule; you can attend PTF meetings, talk with the Volunteer
Coordinator and watch the weekly newsletter. Please prayerfully study these areas and find where the Lord would have you serve.
Our parent organization, PTF, is the heartbeat of our parent partnership. PTF's mission is:
“To partner with the Administration and staff in a positive relationship. As the Administration leads, sets goals, and ensures
proper funding, PTF will be a helpmate to the Administration and staff. PTF will assist in whatever capacity is necessary to
achieve its goals, serving the school at large, while submitting itself to the Administration.”
To be an effective helpmate, PTF seeks to:
• Serve the Administration
• Serve the Teachers
• Facilitate school needs through communication, and fulfill as many of those needs as possible
• Evenly spread the work of PTF across the entire Harbor parent community
• Be financially accountable to the Harbor community
BAD WEATHER CLOSING OF SCHOOL
Students at Harbor Christian Academy typically have to travel the same streets and under the same conditions as students of the
Leander ISD. Therefore, Harbor Christian Academy has adopted a policy to follow the decisions made by the Leander ISD in regard
to closing the school due to weather conditions. Please refer to local news stations for information on Leander ISD school
closings (KTBC 7, NEWS 8 AUSTIN, KVUE 24, or KXAN 36, KEYE 42).
As soon as we know that school will be cancelled, a message will be placed on the school answering machine. Due to the
demographics of our student body, there may be some situations in which HCA may make the decision to close before LISD makes
an announcement. We will make every effort to notify the above listed news entities but the best way to check our status is to
check the school answering machine.
For the safety of our students, families and school personnel, if bad weather begins during the day or if there is a threat of weather
conditions that could hinder the safe pick-up of students, parents will be called and asked to immediately pick up their children.
GENERAL HOLIDAY INFO
HALLOWEEN - While we understand that some families may observe this day with costumes and trick or treating, the majority of
HCA families do not. Harbor Christian Academy will not acknowledge the observance of Halloween and requests that parents
honor this stance. Students are not allowed to bring associated items or bring invitations to or announce any Halloween related
activities at school. Please understand that this is a very sensitive matter to many parents. To ignore this is to dishonor HCA and
HCA families. If there are any questions, or if you would like to discuss this policy, please speak with the Administrator.
THANKSGIVING - This is a wonderful opportunity to teach being thankful from an historical perspective. God's people need to be
thankful and this is the main thought of the Thanksgiving season. Our younger students may have a special Thanksgiving
celebration. Parents will be notified if this is planned.
CHRISTMAS - At HCA we teach that Christmas is the time set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus and that we give gifts because
He was God’s gift to us. We enjoy this season and encourage our students to as well. Our younger classes will enjoy a variety of
fun activities and all of our students will have fun times before the Christmas break which may include exchanges of small gifts.
Please be aware that we will not teach the worldly beliefs of “Santa Claus”. If your children do not know that he does not really
exist, be aware that their classmates may tell them.
EASTER – Easter is the observance of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Though we may have some fun activities at this
time of year, the students will be taught the biblical truths of what it took for Him to atone for the sins of mankind.
We request that any candy or goodies received by your children for any of these days or any days not listed be left at home. We
realize that they get excited and that they want to enjoy or share what they have received but we desire for all edible items brought
to school to be nutritious. Occasionally, teachers may request that parents supply goodies for class parties or celebrations.
Otherwise we ask that sugary snacks are not sent to school.
Affiliation With
ASSOCIATION OF CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS
INTERNATIONAL and ACCELERATED CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Harbor Christian Academy has achieved the honor of being a Quality ACE school, and therefore has qualified to offer dual
enrollment with Lighthouse Christian Academy to provide full accreditation with SACs. Though accreditation is not the hallmark of
great education, we feel this will benefit certain students, especially who plan to study overseas. Each parent will have the option
of dual enrolling at the beginning of the school year. Our teachers' superior qualifications, educational backgrounds, years of
teaching experience and their personal walk with the Lord has established HCA as one of the few schools who can combine
academic excellence with the individual love and support that is needed, but rare in education today.
Harbor Christian Academy is also proud to be a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). ACSI is the
leader in setting standards and trends in Christian education. ACSI's high standards and values adhere with our goals for Harbor
Christian Academy, and it is a privilege to be associated with such a body. Each fall our staff attends the annual School of
Tomorrow convention, which offers a wealth of resources to our teachers. Teachers also attend other educational seminars,
including CHEACT each summer and the ACE School of Tomorrow convention in the fall, and are able to personally meet with
representatives of ABeka and Bob Jones University Press, as well as other Christian publishers of curriculum, to discuss new
and innovative teaching methods. In addition, ACSI and ACE continuously provide members with updates on new legislation
affecting Christian schools, as well as legal information and other vital information to help meet the needs of Christian education.
We also are continuously attending workshops on special needs and challenges of students to help all students excel.
Generally speaking, in academics, almost all Private Christian Schools rank in the top 90-95 percentile in the United States.
Students’ acceptance into Colleges/Universities is based on their SAT and GPA scores. Though it depends on the student’s
achievements, our dual enrollment with Lighthouse and Austin Community College help to prepare our students for enrollment with
the University/College of their choice. We want all of our students to achieve God’s plans.
At the completion of a school year our proof of success exists in happy, confident children who take pride in their achievements,
their personal success and still love school! Our students graduate knowing they have been provided with the foundation they
need to fulfill the destiny God has for them. They will graduate as warriors, equipped with the armor of God!
DRESS CODE FOR KINDERGARTEN READINESS (K-3) THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL
Harbor Christian Academy has a responsibility to keep our students focused on education and provide the best possible
environment for their success. Our dress code is designed to eliminate the morning hassles, prevent "cliques,” and prevent the
peer pressure of styles. The dress code will help our children view each other without bias and remove the potential for non-
productive attitudes towards learning. Based on our extensive experience and our observation allowing students to push the
limits or break the dress code sets up resentment and confusion. Parents, we feel strongly that we have made the best possible
consideration in regard to our dress code. If it is questionable PLEASE, DO NOT ALLOW IT! As parents, supporting the guidelines
of the school is a testimony before God and our children.
Note: HCA reserves the right to approve, disapprove or change dress code requirements as is deemed necessary.
Shirts
Shirts are to be Polo, Golf or dress shirts with collars of any solid color or plaid. Simple stripes are acceptable. Camp shirts are
also acceptable. No logos or emblems may be visible except for the HCA logo. Shirts are to fit appropriately - not excessively
large and not tight fitting (especially for the young ladies). They must be long enough to be tucked in and remain tucked in during
regular movement (i.e.: sitting, bending, stretching or reaching). Girls may also choose to wear uniform blouses. The same fit
requirements as listed above still apply. Undershirts may be worn if necessary but outer shirt must remain buttoned and must fit
correctly. Layering of shirts for fashion purposes is inappropriate.
Pants
Pants must be uniform in style (French Toast is recommended but uniforms are also available at a variety of local stores) in khaki,
navy blue, black, gray, or green. NO HIP HUGGERS OR BAGGY PANTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Shorts or Capri pants are acceptable
if they are at least knee length and uniform in type and properly fitted. Cargo pants with pleated, baggy pockets are NOT
acceptable. This includes cargo shorts as well. Pants and shorts with FLAT pockets will be allowed, this includes cargo and
board shorts. No denim of any color or style will be allowed except for casual days. Any pants or shorts with belt loops must be
worn with a belt.
Skirts/Skorts
Young ladies may wear skirts, jumpers, or skorts which are knee length or below the knee and either khaki, navy blue, black,
gray, or plaid. HCA will be moving to a standardized plaid. If you are buying from French Toast or any other uniform company, you
may want to order the blue/gold plaid which is the choice of the school. They must be properly fitted meaning not tight fitting or
revealing, and not worn with the waistband around the hips. No denim of any color or style will be allowed. Girls are urged to
wear shorts underneath jumpers or skirts for modesty. Please acknowledge that HCA is co-ed and we must enforce these
restrictions.
Shoes/Socks/Hosiery
Dress shoes, casual shoes - loafer type shoes or tennis shoes only if they complement the uniform are permitted. No thong-type

permitted. Young ladies are not allowed to wear high heeled shoes for safety reasons. For P.E., tennis shoes that are properly
fitting and tied (secured) are the only shoes allowed.
Coats, Jackets, Sweaters
Unless otherwise approved by the teacher or Administrator, students will not be allowed to wear their coats, jackets, sweaters,
hoodies, etc., in the classroom with the exception of a solid grey or navy blue Jerzee type jacket or hoodie that zips, or a solid
colored navy blue sweater. No coats, jackets, hoodies, sweaters or other outer wear are permitted at any time in Chapel.
Outerwear with wording or pictures that depict anything other than the brand will not be allowed.
Physical Education Day
Classes will have designated P.E. days. PreK – High School students may wear solid color (navy, gray, or black) mesh or nylon
loose fitting shorts and a solid colored gray, navy, black, or white t-shirt. No logos or emblems on any clothing items (except
HCA). During cold weather, students may wear gray or navy blue, loose fitting, Jerzee type sweats over their shorts (no nylon
warm up suits). PreK-4th grade students should wear the P.E. clothing all day. Students in 5th - 12th grade may bring their P.E.
clothing to change into or they may wear them to school on that day. Properly tied (secured) tennis shoes are the only shoes that
are appropriate during P.E. All students should bring a water bottle to stay properly hydrated. P.E. will be the last period of the day
for the High School students, but they are welcome to bring a clean shirt to change into after the class. Students not appropriately
dressed for P.E. will sit out and will receive a zero (0) for that day’s grade.
Casual Day
Periodically, relaxed standards or casual days may be allowed at the discretion of the Administration. On these days, students will
be expected to wear one of their collared uniform shirts (although they will not need to have it tucked in). Jeans will be allowed on
these days only. T-shirts are allowed only on P.E. days or days specified by the Administration. When t-shirts are allowed, they
must be properly fitted and free of pictures or wording that is offensive in any way.

• Young ladies: hair must be well groomed, out of the eyes, and of a natural color.
• All of our students need to be conscientious about their personal hygiene and keep their hair clean and neat. "Punk",
rock, skater, new wave hairstyles, or multi-colored hair (unnatural color of red, green, blue, etc.) will NOT be acceptable.
About Hygiene:
1. 5th grade students and up must keep deodorant, wipes and a fresh shirt in their lockers at all times.
2. Pre-K – 4th grade students must have a complete clean change of clothes at school at all times.
3. Students who choose to wear perfume or cologne should wear it very lightly
4. We ask that parents work with their teens to become aware of proper hygiene. Poor hygiene can affect student
relationships in the classroom.

• All clothing should be neat in appearance. (i.e.: clean, in good repair and not wrinkled)
• Violations to the dress code may include: requiring the parent to bring a change of clothes, a loss of special privileges, and
an unexcused tardy or absence.
• Parents, please check lengths and condition of shirts, skirts and all other clothing items before bringing your student to
school. You are responsible for your student’s adherence to school policy. Parents of students that are not appropriately dressed
will be called and asked to bring the correct clothing to the school. Students will not be allowed into class or activities until
properly clothed.
Make-up and Jewelry
Young ladies are to refrain from the use of cosmetics or hair spray during class time. Due to the sensitivity that some of our
students have to fragrances, the spraying of perfume or cologne by boys or girls in the vicinity of other students is not allowed. We
discourage the use of makeup for sixth graders and younger. Cosmetics must be modest or will be unacceptable. Girls and boys
may wear gender appropriate watches, rings, necklaces. Jewelry must be modest and if worn, may include no more than one ring
per hand and one necklace. Watches may be worn but bracelets and arm bands will not be permitted. Only girls may wear
earrings, no more than two earrings per ear in ear lobe only. Absolutely no body piercing or tattoos are allowed. Chains hanging
from clothing are not permitted. Only girls are allowed to wear nail polish (one color at a time). Very long nails are not
appropriate.
Pertaining to hair, jewelry, dress and other personal articles: styles that promote social culture over godly character are not
acceptable. This includes peace signs, zodiac signs, anything that denotes the occult in any way and any article that references a
gang lifestyle. Many of our students do not understand the history of these symbols therefore cannot discern how they might effect
or influence others. Also, beards and mustaches are not permitted. The Administration has the right to judge each case
individually.
UNCONDITIONAL COMMITMENT TO ABIDE BY THE HANDBOOK
Each applicant family is required to read, sign, acknowledge and agree to abide by the Harbor Christian Academy Parent/Student
Handbook before admission can be considered.
It is mandatory that students who attend the school come from homes which reinforce the Christian values and beliefs taught
during the school day. To this end, the Administration will assess the parents’ motivation in seeking the student's enrollment in the
school, as well as the student’s willingness to attend and adhere to the discipline policies. This is to protect the mission of the
school that God has provided.
With God’s mighty provision, it is essential that all realize, Harbor Christian Academy is a Kingdom School (see Administrator’s
letter at the front of this handbook); there is an obligation for us all to submit to His mission for our school, and that all intentions be
honorable.
We seek to add to the school community families who will be supportive of the administration, the teachers, and the school's
emphasis on character training by Biblical standards. We must equip this generation His way, with His book.
